Earlier this month was Volunteers’ Week (2nd-8th June), a national week to support and promote the incredible work volunteers make to our communities. On Tuesday 3rd June, Barnsley CVS hosted the Volunteer Awareness and Recruitment Event at Barnsley Civic. The aim of the event was to allow anyone in the borough who currently volunteers or those interested in finding out more to come and chat to the various organisations.
There were around 30 Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations in attendance who had a stall. Some of the organisations that attended were Barnsley Hospice, Barnsley Sea Cadets, Barnsley Borough City of Sanctuary, Motor Neurone Disease Association, and many more. All the organisations were offering exciting and alternative volunteering opportunities across the Barnsley Borough.
They were also joined by the Love Where You Live team from BMBC, as they re-launched their ambitious initiative during Volunteers Week. Love Where You Live is about all of us, working together, listening to each other and making a real difference.
Altogether, we had over 80 people attend the event who were interested in volunteering. It was great to see Barnsley residents finding out all the benefits to volunteering and how flexible it can be around your personal life.
Abbie Ford, Volunteering and Community Officer, National Trust, said, “This year the event attracted people specifically looking for volunteer opportunities.
“I had some good conversations with potential individuals, took several enquiries and spoke to other organisations wanting to work with us.”
John, Volunteer, Barnsley Museums, said, “I would recommend volunteering to someone because it gets you out of the house.
“It gets you job experience, which a lot of employers do want to see - Barnsley Museums is very flexible, open and understanding about your hours.”
