Our Impact

The Barnsley Pound

At Barnsley CVS we endeavor to keep the pound in Barnsley. This means we try to maintain our spending and partnerships within Barnsley. This is rooted in the firm belief that spending locally means we are investing into our community, to support local trade.

Social Value

As an organisation with a large focus around supporting volunteering, we have translated this into our Employer Supported Volunteering policy. We encourage our staff to volunteer every year in their community for the equivalent of one week’s worth of hours. Some of our staff have volunteered their time to local organisations, such as, Barnsley Hospice, Shaw Lane Men Sheds and Barnsley Civic.

Testimonials

"I heard about the Family Hubs Community Grant through the wonderful staff at Barnsley CVS, I then saw the information in the newsletter and knew straight away it was what I had been waiting for.

As health and wellbeing delivery manager for BPL - my passion is to see gaps in provision and create opportunities for better health for those cohorts of people who often get overlooked. During my time as a health referral advisor, I identified pregnant women who would often cancel gym memberships or stop exercising because they were pregnant. This led me to specialise in pre- and post-natal exercise and nutrition so I could help encourage these women to carry on looking after themselves at a time when they needed to be their strongest.

When I moved into my current role, my dream came with me, and I had this idea of creating a full comprehensive timetable of activities across all of our BPL sites that catered for pre- and post-natal women. Barnsley CVS steered me in the right direction and enabled me to apply for the Family Hubs Community Grant.

The benefits to the community are endless with classes such as on track workouts, baby yoga and parent and toddler swims now free to access. The Healthy Mums Project is proof of how we all need to work together to help improve the health and wellbeing landscape of Barnsley.”

Anne Nixon, Health and Wellbeing Delivery Manager, BPL
"I heard about Barnsley CVS and their services by word of mouth from other users. Barnsley CVS provides accountancy services to two charities where I am a trustee and treasurer. I would recommend Barnsley CVS accountancy services as they have provided a helpful and efficient person to guide me through the correct procedures. I use my local infrastructure organisation because they have an appreciation of what it is like to work in the voluntary sector and some of the difficulties associated with volunteers.  A private sector company may not be as helpful or tolerant.”

Peter Mulrooney, Trustee and Treasurer, Barnsley Churches Drop In Project and H.O.P.E in Community (respectively)
"Our charity is very happy with the accountancy and payroll services we have received for many years. As a small charity we do not have staff to do these jobs, therefore knowing we are supported by knowledgeable qualified staff is reassuring to me as CEO. I would recommend the service Barnsley CVS provides with confidence.”

Steve Bentham-Bates, CEO, Help 4 Homeless Veterans
“As a small fairly informal group, we did not need formal audits, however as we decided to become a registered charity (and registered limited company) It became a requirement. We worked closely with advisors from Barnsley CVS, principally Ann Moffatt. It was a natural choice. Initially we were able to have assistance from a local retired accountant, but everything was paper based. It did work ok when there were not too many transactions. Once the hall was complete and there were numerous regular groups, private lettings, and larger events, it started to become increasingly onerous. In I think 2017 we began discussing using a computer-based accounting system with our community accountant. We started using QuickBooks, via a discounted license arrangement with Barnsley CVS. They provided some training and continued support. It also means that our account submissions are electronic.

We would recommend using  Barnsley CVS as they have a real understanding of the complexities of running small community based organisations which, like us, have no financial expertise in house, as well as a good service to larger organisations which may have less need for support but still need audited accounts prepared. We get support if needed throughout the year with QuickBooks, though we get on well with it now. The staff are really helpful and approachable as well as professional.

I feel as though the service offered by Barnsley CVS is value for money. The amount we spend on accountancy (including the QuickBooks license) is a big chunk of our running costs. However, we have to operate within the law and I doubt we would get that level of service and help from a private practice. Their knowledge and experience of voluntary organisations of all shapes and sizes is invaluable.”

Tricia Watters, Chair, Billingley Village Community Association Limited
"We heard about the offer from Barnsley CVS via their website. They provide us with annual accounts, independent examination, payroll and pension service. I would recommend the services offered by Barnsley CVS as they have friendly staff who are very knowledgeable and easy to communicate with. They are quick to respond to any questions/queries and always happy to help. I have every confidence in all the services they provide. We use Barnsley CVS as they are a much cheaper option than a private company plus, I feel Barnsley CVS understand the sector better than a private sector company would.”

"Thank you all for making yesterday such a truly special and successful day. Everything came together so beautifully, and that was entirely down to the incredible effort and care each of you put in — it all felt seamless. Jamie, thank you for taking care of all the practical details — from setting up the room and electronics to making sure the kitchen was ready. Your quiet efficiency made everything run like clockwork.Sakura, thank you for the months of thoughtful promotion and preparation. And to both you and Karen, thank you for being such warm, attentive hosts, making sure everyone was welcomed, cared for, and comfortable throughout the day. And Lara, thank you for your constant support. Also, for starting and closing the conference with such grace, and for creating an atmosphere where everyone felt at ease and inspired.”

“I enjoyed the different presentations, and that they were all varied in their content but still related to the overall theme. It was great to then chat with some of them for the table discussions. It was brilliant to see such a range of vegetarian options at lunch as well – I felt spoiled!”
