Good news from Penistone FM: we have been awarded a grant of £8,583 from Penistone Area Council's Working Together Fund - Supporting Young People Grant.
We have launched our new project 'Active Minds’ which will include delivering training to young people aged 16-25; the training will equip young people with skills around confidence building, using their voice and making new social and community connections.
During the lockdown earlier this year, we started to become increasingly concerned for some of our younger volunteers and their peers, who were experiencing an increased knock in confidence and low mood levels partly due to the pandemic.
This is when we started to look at the possibility of creating a training course that would be similar to some of our previous courses we have run, not with the focus in creating ‘radio presenters’ but rather as a way of us helping rebuild the confidence and mental health of the young people in our community.
We believe the Coronavirus Pandemic will have had an impact on people in many different ways. In a YouGov survey of November 2020, 24% of adults said they experienced feelings of loneliness, levels of which were higher in young people, full-time students, single parents and the young unemployed. A survey we carried out at the Youth Conference at Penistone Grammar School in November 2019, portrayed a similar picture with many local young people feeling under intense pressure, and we can only imagine the pandemic has exacerbated these problems.
The training course is completely free, due to the funding from Penistone Area Council, and will run for 7 weeks at a time. Young people will get the chance to experience a professional radio studio and enjoy different elements of radio, from recording and editing audio to filming and making connections with local volunteer groups.
The training course will also offer the opportunity for the trainees to take part in the Active Mind Podcast where they will be able to talk about personal challenges and everyday life for young people in South Yorkshire.
We are inviting people from across the borough who have experienced poor mental health and/or a loss of confidence in the past year to get in contact to find out more information.
