Safeguarding Awareness Week - 18th - 22nd November 2024

Hello, here is our Safeguarding Awareness Week (SAW) newsletter, highlighting all the events, training and workshops happening during SAW which runs between the 18th - 22nd November. Most of the information included in this newsletter is focussed targeted to professionals in Barnsley. NEWS
New guidance published by the DCMS for charities dealing with safeguarding allegations

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport have published guidance on handling safeguarding allegations in a charity.

Every organisation that delivers charitable activities has a responsibility to safeguard people from harm or abuse, whether they are staff members, volunteers, or other people who come into contact with your charity through its work. This tool will help charities in England to handle the reporting of safeguarding allegations about the behaviour or actions of a person in their charity.

WORKSHOPS

Do you work for, or volunteer at, a sport club or physical activity group?

Douglas and Nicola, the Sport Welfare Officers at Yorkshire Sport Foundation, would like to tell you more about their role and the free safeguarding and welfare support they can offer you. This 30-minute lunchtime session will also cover some basic safeguarding awareness and guide you to other organisations who can provide extra training and support with concerns.

The session will take place online via Microsoft Teams on Thursday 21 November at 12pm.

Lunch and learn online workshops
 

Ann Craft Trust and City of York Safeguarding Adults Board have collaborated to create online workshops for SAW. See details below: 

 Monday 18th November 12.30pm to 1.30pm - Predatory Marriage - This workshop is aimed at professionals and public 

Predatory Marriage is generally described as when a (usually younger) person marries a (usually older) who lacks capacity to marry, with the intention of acquiring access to their estate upon their death.

Daphne Franks explores this topic through her lived experience and looks at the complexities and cross overs with grooming, gaslighting and coercive control of many of the predators. 

Wednesday 20th November 12.30pm to 1.30pm - Trauma Informed Practice - This workshop is aimed at professionals

This workshop looks at

  • What is trauma and its impact?
  • What is trauma informed care?
  • Who are boundaries for and why do we need them?
  • How working with trauma can impact staff and organisations
  • Looking after ourselves and others

Thursday 21st November 12pm to 1pm - Safeguarding - the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) - This workshop is aimed at professionals

How they are in a unique position to support and identify adults at risk of harm and abuse through the advanced customer support role and job centres as safe places for victims of domestic abuse

Please provide: your name, organisation and job role (if applicable) and contact email. We will then send you a teams link for the individual workshop.

Deadline for booking a place on the workshop is the day before the event, that is, Friday 15th November for the Monday session and the day before each session after this.

Was not brought: safeguarding children and vulnerable adults who are not brought to health appointments

Thursday 21st November, 11am-12pm, via Microsoft Teams

This is a multi-agency session open to all professionals organised by SWYT. This session is for those wanting to understand: what ‘was not brought’ means. When adults and children not being brought to health appointments becomes a safeguarding concern. Recognise that adults and children not being brought to appointments can be an indicator of neglect. Support the use of the ‘was not brought’ terminology rather that ‘did not attend’ where appropriate.

TRAINING
Understanding child/adolescent to parent abuse

Tuesday 19th November, 10am-1pm, Priory Centre, Barnsley

This training will cover:

Signs and indicators of child to parent abuse
How professionals can support the family
Knowledge of local service

Hidden men training

Tuesday 19th November, 10.30am-12pm, via Microsoft Teams. 

This training addresses the ‘myth of the invisible man’ report. It covers why men are sometimes excluded from safeguarding enquiries and the skills we need to engage them.

Safer South Yorkshire Referral Training - SYFR

As part of our continued support for Safeguarding Awareness Week, SYFR are again this year offering a number of open sessions of our Safer South Yorkshire Referral Training delivered via Microsoft Teams for any current and potential referral partners.

Barnsley Market Stalls - SAW

As part of Safeguarding Awareness Week, we'll be holding up to 8 stalls all day Monday to Friday. Different organisations will be giving out resources, information and advice to the public. All part of our mission to make the public more informed around Safeguarding adults & children.

These will be at Barnsley Market all week. Please share with service users.
